CHAPTER ONE –
Period 3. Science. Ugh.
Everyone is crowding around me, watching me through the corner of their eyes from their seats. Amelia has her elbows on the table, while Habel’s secretly staring at the drawings of Peter, that I have carelessly left open, on the inside cover of my science book. Kevin and Jacob are so discreetly making faces, and I sit with my head down, feeling the pulse of my heart quicken as I colour love hearts with my gel pen.
Peter comes over near me, asking to borrow a pencil to draw a table, and I don’t notice as Amelia, Habel, Jacob and Kevin tip out their pencil cases, hiding their pencils and lying that they don’t have any. My heart’s bursting, as he comes over, and I grab a chewed pencil out of my bag and hand it to him.
I watch him walk back to his desk, and I can feel the eyes of my friends baring into the back of my head. My head slips into my hand, as he gnaws on the tip of the pencil absently, a trait I instantly recognise as one of my own. He slowly walks back towards me, clutching the pencil in his left hand. I hold out my hand and he presses the pencil into my hand, curling my fingers over the spot he once had held. I feel where he was gnawing, the grip of the pencil still warm from his hand.
But… He doesn’t walk away from me. Not yet. He stares into my dark brown eyes, my hair falling from behind my shoulder. His mouth moves, but I am too distracted by his presence in front of me. He bends down, his hand still clutching the pencil in between my fingers, and slowly takes it and puts it down onto the table. He brushes the hair out of my face, and leans closer…. Ever so slightly closer.
His presence beside me distracts me, as everyone slowly creeps out of the class, not daring to break this intimate moment. Silence fills the room. The window is open, and I feel goosebumps travel down my legs. The gentle coldness from his hand sends hot sparks down my spine. My heart pounding faster than ever before. My head dizzy from his touch.
He leans in. Closer. Closer. Closer.
Until the only space left, is the gap between our lips.
And soon that gap disappears as well….
