Today I had the opportunity to visit the University of Newcastle as part of BRINC; a science, biomechanics research program that strives to empower girls and introduce them into the STEM field.
Over the course of this past term, my peers and I, with the help of our mentor Suzanne Snodgrass, have been coming up with a problem that we could solve and study using biomechanics. The focus of our research is to study how posture can change in musicians, while in different situations. We were able to use motion tracking sensors and cameras to track my posture while sitting, standing, and playing a hard vs an easy piece of music. We also compared that to a static inexperienced person, to see their automatic positioning when first learning how to play saxophone.
Suzanne was kind enough to take us out for lunch, and we then had the opportunity to take a tour of the Callaghan Campus, and see many features and opportunities the university had to offer, like the swimming pool, lecture halls, and library.
Overall, I had a really good time and am really grateful that I could experience a taste of what uni life is like!
