In November of 2022, I applied to a program called Max Potential. I had no idea what it was, nor what I would be getting myself into.
In December, I received an email congratulating me of my acceptance into the program.
Never would I have thought that the Max Potential program would change my life.
Over the course of 2023, I had many meetings with my mentor Kate. We slowly worked to achieve my goals; improving my ability to manage my stress and anxiety from a 4 to an 8. I faced many social challenges, from feeling disconnected from friends and family, to being vulnerable in front of a crowd of people.
At the start of Max Potential, I was identified as a individual who wanted to grow. I was someone who knew that growth was not a linear progression, but rather a rollercoaster that I was strapped to. A ride called life sent trials and tribulations my way, forcing me to sit through discomfort but with a reward or a lesson at the end.
At the end of Max Potential, I was identified by both my mentor, my friends, and random strangers as someone who had grown. Someone who had potential to do great things, with just a bit of guidance, confidence and bravery to help me along the way. I produced a personal expression film showcasing my struggle with self-identity, which was welcomed by open arms by Carla and her team.
From there, that film saw many eyes.
It was shown at the final celebration assembly at the end of Max Potential journey. It was seen by MP Liesl Tesch, member for Gosford. She loved my film so much, that she eagerly offered me the opportunity of doing work experience with her at NSW Parliament.
I took up the opportunity, and from there I gained many more.
In December of 2023, I applied for a program called Youth Parliament. I had no idea what it was, nor what I would be getting myself into. In fact, I just did it for the shits and giggles because in reality, I thought "What do I have to lose? Absolutely nothing."
In February, I received an email saying I had shortlisted for the program, and finally one congratulating me of my acceptance. I was awarded a sponsorship and placed in the Arts, Music and Culture committee.
As I board yet another rollercoaster, I can’t help but feel anxious and scared for what this journey may entail. But if Max Potential has taught me anything, it’s the MAXI principles: Make Things Happen, Achieve Personal Significance, X out the negatives and Internalise the Right Principles.
Regardless of the nerves tightening in my chest, I hope, no I know, that this opportunity will help me grow and become an even better version of myself.
I’m excited to see the person I become!
