What is reality? The world we see around us? Or the world pieced together by all our perceptions of it? In our class discussion, I was forced to think about whether the world we are actually living in is real, and what reality actually is.
I believe that reality is a complex idea that many individuals don’t fully understand. I strongly believe that reality exists, but we only see pieces of it, meaning that everyone’s perception of reality is different. For example, people who are colourblind can’t see certain colours, however they know that it exists. Salman Rushdie quotes ‘Reality is a question of perspective; the further you get from the past, the more concrete and plausible it seems, but as you approach the present, it inevitably seems incredible,’ which I strongly agree with.
Plato argued that there’s more to the world than meets the eye, an idea which I also agree with. Reality can appear in different levels – Just because we may not see something such as atoms, doesn’t mean it’s not there. Plato further argued that our mistake was thinking that the material objects of the ordinary world are the most real things, and said that ‘We can change our reality by changing our mind,’ which relates back to Rushdie’s view of reality.
