My Views About The Meaning of True Love
I believe that relationships need to have a combination of realistic and idealistic views.
Idealistic views about true love focuses mainly on the idea of being in love, rather than actually falling in love with someone. This causes idealistic people to fall in love quickly with other people, since they want to be in love and experience different types of love. At a young age, many people will have idealistic views about love, since we read so many books about ‘falling in love’ and living ‘happily ever after.’ However, as we grow older, we find that mindset turning into a more realistic one, and we face the brutal reality of love.
Realistic views about true love mean that people are more likely to accept people for who they are, and don’t expect them to change in a relationship. While this can keep the relationship stable but also predictable, it also means that the relationship will lack spontaneity and excitement. Many people who have a realism mindset often won’t expect to find true love but if they do find themselves in an intimate relationship, they would rather have a stable relationship than one that ends in heartbreak.
Plato agrees with both of these views, as he exclaims “When a person meets the half that is his very own, something wonderful happens: the two are struck from their senses by love, by a sense of belonging to one another, and by desire, and they don’t want to be separated from one another, not even for a moment,” – forming a more idealistic view about true love. However, he also says that “love is a grave mental disease,” which presents a more realistic view. If you’ve ever fallen in love, your heart is wide open which means that someone can get inside and mess it all up.
In both instances, being an idealist or a realist is just a matter of how we perceive life and relate to the people around us. I think that true love is based on these two philosophical ideas. By combining the idealists’ point of view where they have what it takes to make the world a better place, expecting the best of people (even if there is a disappointment) and the realists view of stability and having their feet on earth at times, then we could have a very interesting combination of personality traits and sort of a balance, that can become advantageous when it comes to relationships.
